Family Peace Center Celebrates 10 Years of Collaborative Services

WHEREAS: The City of Milwaukee proudly joins families and community members in recognizing the 10th anniversary of Sojourner Family Peace Center on Thursday, May 28, 2026.

Volunteers, current and former employees, long‑time partners, and representatives from past and present co‑located organizations filled the Family Peace Center to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The gathering reflected the community commitment that has shaped the Center since its opening. During the event, Mayor Cavalier Johnson officially proclaimed May 28, 2026, as Sojourner Family Peace Center Day, honoring this milestone and the Center’s decade of service to survivors and families.

Remarks included reflections from Sojourner President & CEO Carmen Pitre, who spoke about the vision that inspired the Center: creating a single, safe, welcoming place where survivors can access support without navigating multiple systems or locations. She reminded attendees that the organization’s name is intentional. “We are not a justice center—we are a peace center,” she emphasized, underscoring the mission to bring peace, healing, and stability to those they serve.

Carmen Pitre also highlighted that healing does not look the same for everyone. Not every situation belongs in a courtroom; sometimes healing begins in a therapy session for adults or children, a summer camp experience, creative art therapy, or participation in a VOICES group. The Family Peace Center is proud to offer multiple pathways to safety, recovery, and empowerment.

The program concluded with a meaningful conversation on survivors’ routes to healing and peace, led by members of the VOICES panel, Deputy District Attorney Matt Torbenson, and Restorative Practices & Engagement Manager Rae Bruns. Their discussion showcased the many ways survivors rebuild their lives and reclaim their sense of peace.

We are extremely thankful for Sojourner President & CEO Carmen Pitre, Sojourner Board President Holly Haseley, Mayor Cavalier Johnson, Children’s Wisconsin President & CEO Gil Peri, Milwaukee County District Attorney Kent Lovern, and Sojourner Director of Outcomes & Evaluation Dr. Erin Schubert for sharing their reflections on the history, purpose, and impact of the Family Peace Center.
