Who We Are

"I will not allow my life's light to be determined by the darkness around me."

~ Sojourner Truth ~

What is Sojourner?

A Pillar of Peace for 50 Years

Sojourner Family Peace Center is the most comprehensive nonprofit provider of domestic violence prevention and intervention services in Wisconsin, serving nearly 10,000 clients each year. Established in 1975, Sojourner provides an array of support aimed at helping families affected by domestic violence achieve safety, justice and well-being.

Our primary goals are to ensure the safety of victims of family violence and provide a pathway out of violence for victims and abusers through opportunities to make positive and lasting changes for themselves and their children.

A colorful mosaic artwork shaped like a large circle, featuring an intricate design with a fiery orange and yellow background. The word "HOPE RISES" is prominently displayed in dark letters, surrounded by patterns of blue, green, red, and black tiles. The piece is mounted on a textured base that also incorporates various mosaic colors.

Our primary goals are to ensure the safety of victims of domestic violence and to provide a pathway out of violence for victims and abusers through opportunities to make positive and lasting changes for themselves and their children.

Sojourner programs and services include:

  • FPC Advocacy: Provides advocacy, crisis intervention and in-depth case management services to support the complex needs of survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.
  • Hope & Healing Program: Provides adult survivors with support and opportunities to heal, learn, build community, and amplify survivor voice. Services include support groups, the VOICES Committee of Survivors, and a variety of healing centered programming.
  • Russian-Speaking Family Strengthening Program: Provides advocacy and in-depth case management services to Russian-speaking adult victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking throughout the state of Wisconsin. All services are strictly confidential, free and survivor-focused.
  • Children’s Program: Provides youth and families with support to heal, learn, and grow together to cultivate healthy family relationships and prevent cycles of domestic violence. Services include drop-in programming, support groups, and Camp Hope.
  • Sojourner Truth House: 24-hour crisis shelter provides support and assistance to adults and children who are fleeing domestic violence, sexual abuse and/or human trafficking.
  • Community Domestic Abuse Advocates Program (CDAAP): The team aims to address and prevent DV at the neighborhood level. Advocates are co-located at Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) districts. Teams of advocates and MPD officers respond to DV-related calls for service by conducting home visits within days of the violence incident to get survivors connected to life saving resources.
  • Restraining Orders: Sojourner Advocates provide restraining order assistance to Milwaukee County residents at the Milwaukee County Courthouse located at 901 N. 9th Street, Room 711. Advocates are available to accompany you to your hearing for a restraining order filed because of domestic violence. However, Sojourner Advocates are not lawyers and cannot speak on your behalf.
