Domestic violence is at an all-time high, and in Milwaukee, reports have spiked 28% due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Victims face overwhelming barriers to escape, but we rarely hear the stories until it’s too late. The truth is, many survivors cannot speak publicly—for reasons of safety, healing or both.
So, #UntilSheCan have the freedom to speak her own truth, we will. Together, we can support domestic violence survivors, provide the tools to rebuild, and give a voice to their stories.
With your help, we can make #UntilSheCan a global rally cry and change statistics by shedding light on a topic few choose to discuss.
DONATE
Big or small, your donations can provide the necessary resources to support survivors in their journey to recovery. Make a difference and consider donating to Sojourner Family Peace Center or your local shelter.
PARTICIPATE & POST
Many survivors must hide their faces when sharing their stories, for fear of repercussions. #UntilSheCan reveal her own story, we’re asking you to use your face in a showing of support and solidarity.
Use your favorite purple medium—paint, makeup, marker— whatever you have handy! And add the #UntilSheCan hashtag to your face. Feel free to get creative with additional messages or symbols of support, too.
Post your photo to social media with your message of support for Domestic Violence survivors. Be sure to use the #UntilSheCan hashtag and challenge friends to participate, too.
- 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence (e.g. beating, burning, strangling) by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
- On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the U.S. That’s more than 10 million women and men annually.
- 1 in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence.
- In 2019 alone, Sojourner made 80,500 contacts with over 11,800 clients. Of those served, nearly 80% of survivors reported an annual household income of less than $15,000 and the vast majority of clients resided in Milwaukee’s poorest neighborhoods.
