Earlier this fall, VOICES member, Jennifer Moston, was featured in a ProPublica article that explored some of the challenges survivors of domestic violence experience in the Wisconsin family court system. Jennifer chose to share her story to raise awareness around these issues, advocate for fellow survivors and their children, and create change.

VOICES member, Laurel Blackstone, recently published her book: But I Never Got a Black Eye: One Woman’s Story of Domestic Violence and Other Abuses. In it, she shares her story of survival and healing with the goal of raising awareness and offering a message of hope to fellow survivors.

On Saturday, October 2nd, LaVerne Badger and Natalie Hayden, survivors of domestic violence who met while serving on Sojourner’s VOICES committee, hosted a city-wide, DV-awareness 5k walk/run to advocate prevention, raise awareness and to educate the community.

We recently received a unique and incredibly thoughtful donation. An agency friend, supporter and activist created a hand-made a chandelier of 1,000 origami cranes for Sojourner. In Japanese culture, it was believed that if one folded 1,000 origami cranes, one’s wish would come true. It has also become a symbol of hope and healing during challenging times.

Participants in Sojourner’s Healing Art program, in collaboration with Artists Working in Education (AWE), have completed several mosaic tile art projects, including ‘Hope Totem’ and ‘Hope Rises.’ Survivors and children worked on the projects on Wednesday nights over the past 2 years.
