Survivor spotlight: Mia

Mia’s first call to Sojourner’s 24-hour hotline shelter was in May of 2019. The police department referred her to the agency following a domestic violence incident. She discussed her situation with and Advocate and decided it was safest for her to stay at a shelter in Waukesha, far from her abusive partner.

Survivor spotlight: Sara

Selfless, caring and concerned about meeting other people’s needs – that’s just Sara’s way.

It started when she was young. When Sara was 10 years old, her father walked out on the family, shifting his adult-sized responsibilities onto her tiny shoulders. It was a devastating blow. Her siblings turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with their father’s absence while Sara put aside her feelings of abandonment to care for her family.

Sojourner partners with Artists Working in Education (AWE) and their artist-in-residence program where local artists create large-scale works of art with Milwaukee youth. We’ve worked with AWE since 2018 and just completed our second piece, Hope Rises.
